What sunken concrete looks like
Concrete does not sink on its own. The slab is fine; the ground under it moved. You notice it as:
- A driveway or sidewalk section that has dropped, leaving a lip you can trip on or catch a car bumper on
- A garage floor that slopes toward one corner or away from the door
- A patio or pool deck pulling away from the house and tilting back toward the foundation
- Front or back steps that have settled and separated from the stoop
- Pooling water on a slab that used to drain, or water running toward the house instead of away
- Gaps under a slab where you can see daylight or wash-out
Why concrete settles in Kansas City
The same clay soil that moves foundations moves the slabs around your house, and slabs have an extra problem: the ground under them was disturbed when they were poured and often was not compacted well.
Water is usually the trigger. A downspout draining next to a driveway, a poorly graded yard, or a leaking service line washes fines out of the soil and leaves a void. The slab loses support and drops into it.
How polyjacking lifts a sunken slab
Polyjacking, also called foam jacking or PolyLevel-style lifting, fills the void under the slab with expanding polyurethane and raises the concrete back to level.
